A rare opportunity in North Willow Glen, where charm, space, and thoughtful design come together on an impressive ~11,000 sq.ft. lot tucked within a peaceful cul-de-sac. Wide streets and a welcoming neighborhood—where many residents have lived for decades—create a sense of community that is increasingly hard to find. This beautifully remodeled California ranch blends classic character with modern Scandinavian-inspired design, emphasizing natural light, clean lines, and warm white-oak tones throughout. The heart of the home is the open kitchen, dining, and living space—transformed during a major renovation to create a seamless gathering area centered around a large island and filled with soft afternoon light. The design allows easy sightlines to the expansive backyard, perfect for keeping an eye on outdoor fun while cooking or entertaining. The oversized lot offers incredible flexibility for gatherings, play, gardening, or relaxing evenings under the trees with Meyer lemon and lime nearby. A detached backyard unit provides versatile space for guests, extended family, or a private retreat. Major improvements include a re-imagined/remodeled kitchen and bathrooms, updated electrical panel, newer roof, newer HVAC system, new flooring, smooth wall finishes, upgraded windows, EV charging capability, and more. Conveniently located near the vibrant shops, dining, and seasonal charm of Willow Glen while maintaining the quiet feel of a tucked-away neighborhood.
THE BEGINNING
We spent about 4-5 months searching for a home that had both character and the potential for us to truly make it our own. While I’ve always dreamed of living in Willow Glen with its tree-lined streets, festive porch decorations, and that feeling of living in a small town in a big city, we struggled to find a property that didn't feel cramped.
The moment we walked in, everything changed. The sliding glass doors drew my eyes straight to the backyard, and I knew this was different. Finding an 11,000-square-foot lot in San Jose is pretty rare, but finding one in North Willow Glen felt like a "needle in a haystack" find. You could pitch a baseball and have room to spare; we knew right then that this was the one.
THE SETTING
The first thing guests notice even before arriving at the house (and one character I fell in love with) are the wide, open streets. Unlike the tight parking and narrow streets common in Willow Glen, this cul-de-sac feels incredibly spacious and safe. There’s plenty of space to bike, skateboard, rollerblade, etc.
There’s a rare sense of stability here; a lot of our neighbors have lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years, and we felt welcomed immediately when we were greeted with a bottle of wine. That long-term vision also factored into the separate unit. We loved the flexibility of having a space for visiting guests or parents as they get older, or even a spot for my son to hang out with friends while still being close to home.
WHAT YOU GREW TO LOVE
What caught us off guard after moving in was just how central this "secret nook" really is. We didn't fully realize during the purchase that we were sitting on a major hub. I know it’s always mentioned in a listing description, but actually living it daily for the last almost 10 years, having 280, 87, and 880 all converge nearby means you can easily get to where you need to go in the Bay Area. Also, within ten minutes, you have access to the SAP Center, Santana Row, Valley Fair, Downtown WG and SJ, Pruneyard, several museums and the airport. Whether it's five different Safeways or a hospital just six minutes away (there’s an urgent care 3 minutes away that was literally a life-saver!), everything you need is right at your fingertips.
THE VISION
We knew from the start this would be a long-term remodel, but the "big picture" was always about opening up the space to let it breathe. Our goal was to blend the classic California ranch architecture with a Scandinavian hygge influence. By focusing on natural light, soft whites, and white oak influenced floors, we’ve turned the spaces into feelings of both modern and cozy.
THE REMODEL
Before the remodel, the layout felt closed off - you couldn’t even hold a conversation with someone while cooking. By opening the kitchen to the dining & living areas, it transformed the daily rhythm of our home. We added a big island that has naturally become our favorite gathering spot, and a new window by the dining table that casts a golden glow from the afternoon sun. The redesign was also intentional for our family life. For example, the kitchen is positioned so you can keep an eye on the kids playing in the backyard while you’re at the sink.
We also removed the heavy, oversized crown molding (that was EVERYWHERE in the house) and flattened and smoothed out every textured wall in the house. The flow between the indoors and outdoors feels easy; whether we’re grilling or bringing dinner out to the patio, the yard feels like a natural extension to the kitchen and dining. It’s as much living inside as it is outside.
Randomly, of all design choices we made, my favorite piece in the house is the primary bathroom vanity. It’s completely custom and handmade from solid walnut; it’s the piece I’d wake up and admire every morning. In fact, my one disclaimer to the next owners is that if you ever decide to remodel that bathroom, please let me know - I’ll gladly take that vanity off your hands!
DAILY LIFE
Daily life here naturally centers around the kitchen, the dining table, and the couch. My favorite weekend ritual is a quiet morning with a cup of coffee at the table, watching the squirrels dash through the trees with my dog by my side. It’s a peaceful start before the day is filled with errands and tasks.
This home was built for hosting. We’ve shared so many holidays (Thanksgivings, Christmases, birthdays, etc) here, gathering everyone around the main table while the kids have their own play spaces nearby. The backyard holds its own special memories: summer BBQs, water balloon fights, slip-n-slides, followed by movies or sports projected during the evening. We’ve spent countless evenings enjoying hot pot dinners, roasting s’mores by the fire, and mixing cocktails with fresh fruit from our own Meyer lemon and lime trees. The backyard unit has been the ultimate companion to all of this, serving as a bathroom without having people walk through the house, or as a guest room.
NORTH WILLOW GLEN
I always described this area as the “secret nook”, a place that defies the trend of "introverted" Bay Area neighborhoods. Here, the community culture is led by a neighborhood committee that organizes everything from July 4th block parties and National Night Out gatherings to friendly Christmas decoration competitions. There’s even a neighborhood email if you need to reach out for anything (advice, updates, recommendations, coyote sightings, etc). BUT one of the best things about this street is the balance; you can be as social or as private as you like. There’s a strong community without the "nosy neighbor" feel.
Halloween is particularly special; in the nearby court, neighbors gather around bonfires and pool their candy in the center for the kids. Specifically, the cul-de-sac holds a very special memory in my mind. I have so many mental photographs of dogs playing together and kids using the street as a stage for "learn to bike" milestones, foot races, and impromptu pickleball or roller hockey games.
My favorite time of day is sunset, taking my dog for a stroll as the sky turns into a colorful backdrop for the neighborhood. In fall, all the large trees turn a golden yellow tone. When we want to head into downtown Willow Glen, our "secret" route is taking Delbert to Pedro to Lincoln. And for a local tip: the taco family meal at Arteaga’s is amazing at a reasonable price (you’ll pass it on the way to DTWG).
LOOKING BACK
If I had to summarize this home in a single phrase, it would be as a suburban paradox: an 11,000-square-foot retreat that sits right in the middle of everything. Looking back, the remodel was worth it. Even now, I look around and see unlimited possibilities, like adding a second level, connecting the main house to the back unit, or finally bringing in those backyard chickens.
In the story of my life, this home represents a chapter where I became the architect of my own peace. My only advice to the next owner is to allow themselves to dream just as big. I hope they find as much joy as I did in building their own version here.
If I could bottle up one thing from our time here, it would be the sense of connection to both the people and the place. I’ll truly miss the neighbors; they are the kind of people you can actually rely on. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised when a neighbor ended up being my son's hockey coach! There is a wonderful familiarity in seeing schoolmates and friendly faces every time you step outside. Leaving is hard because this house and backyard have been the consistent backdrop to my son growing up. The memories of family/friend gatherings and watching him grow up in the yard are absolutely priceless.
